Fun Thanksgiving Day Facts

Thanksgiving is a day to spend with friends and family giving thanks for the year we have had. In the United States it is also a day to celebrate our welcome by the Native’s to the new world. While that part of the holiday has almost all but been forgotten, there are some fun facts to review or create a quick trivia game to discuss over dinner.


1.) Did you know that turkeys, just like humans, can have heart attacks? The Air Force found this out when they were conducting test runs that break the sound barrier. Fields of turkeys would drop dead.


2.) Wild turkeys are known to spend the night in trees.


3.) Californians consume the largest quantity of turkey here in the United States.


4.) Full grown Turkeys have over 3,000 feathers to be plucked before you can cook them.


5.) The turkey almost became the United States national bird, when Benjamin Franklin proposed the idea.


6.) Wild turkey’s when spooked can run at speeds of 20 mph.


7.) The puritans brought beer when they came over on the Mayflower. As it was safer than drinking water.


8.) In a matter of seconds a wild turkey can burst into flight approaching speeds of 50 to 55 mph.


9.) The Vatican thought the turkey trot was too suggestive; which is the main reason it became so wildly popular.


10.) Turkey actually see in color.
