Supporting Local Business

Supporting local business has always been good, yet it has really been brought to the forefront of every one's mind since "The Occupy movement" began.   The fascinating thing about The Occupy movement is the off shoot movements that have sprung up or been brought to light.   Movements that are educating and supporting a shift back to how things use to be, where the vast majority of business's  were local and independently owned.

One such movement is "Independent We Stand".  Their goal is to educate the public on the benefits of buying from local independent businesses and how it supports our communities.  There site contains a directory of independently owned business's, the one downside is they are not set up in their directory for business listings that do no have a traditional brick and mortar storefront.   While bothersome for us, the message is one we can get behind.

So how does buying local benefit.   Independent We Stand has a fabulous tool on their website, that puts it in simple terms.  The tool lets you choose state and city (or as close as it gets to where you live).  Once you have done that it provides a synopsis, like the one below that we generated for the Portland, Oregon metro area.

"If every family in the Portland metro area spent just $100 of their holiday budget at locally-owned, independent businesses, over $57,663,252* would be directly returned to the Portland community. That means better schools, better roads, more support for police, fire and rescue departments and stronger local economies."

As you can see there really are some great benefits to buying from independent business's as well as locally owned business.   Something to think about as you move forward with your holiday's.
